10 digital security precautions you must have

We have prepared a complete content with 10 digital security precautions for you to follow and protect yourself from cybercriminals. Check out!

10 digital security precautions

Unlike physical environments, not everything is tangible in the online realm, but that doesn't mean that protection with “padlocks and electric fences” should be ignored. There are now different ways of applying these systems online, insuring material goods.

1. Have strong passwords and update them periodically

Passwords are our main protections to block digital attacks . So no laziness or carelessness when creating one! Use uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols to make it difficult for cybercriminals to discover.

Avoid linking them to personal data such as birthdays, first and last names, documentation numbers and telephone numbers. This information is stored in several databases of government institutions, and unfortunately, not all of them have a good protection system.

Also, change your passwords at least every 6 months to keep your protection in place. And no writing them all down in a virtual or even physical space. If someone gets access, they'll practically have you in the palm of their hands. Try to leave them in different places where only you have access, preferably physically.

2. Install an antivirus

Antiviruses are programs created to act against possible threats to your devices, such as cell phones and computers. Upon detecting malicious files that may somehow harm the operating system, they block access and issue a security notification to you. So be sure to have one.

When choosing an antivirus , consider the reliability it has on the market, the usability of the platform, the breadth of protection provided and the quality of that protection. So, research the leading brands in the market and check out the main feedbacks that their users give.

3. Use VPN

VPNs are like a kind of intermediary virtual space between your computer and a certain network. These spaces are encrypted virtual private networks that protect the information contained on your machine, such as location, for example.

The current network we use is public, based on data sharing following standard protocols. The VPN sits over the public network, protecting your data sharing and bringing you only what is available online. That is, search history, algorithms, among other systems will not have access to your browsing journey to indicate results, products, content, etc.

4. Enable two-step verification

Let's think of a practical example: why do you lock the door and the gate at home? To make it harder for bad people to get in, right? The same logic applies to two-step verification or authentication.

With it activated, only you will be able to access your programs and information, as you will be confirming to the protection system that you are yourself. As well as being able to enter your home by having the correct keys.

5. Access only known and trusted links

Always check a link or file before clicking, as it may contain spy programs that have stolen your data. Always ask the following questions: is the person who sent me this link trustworthy? Is the URL too complex? If you doubt any of these questions, don't click!

And even if it's a link received by a trusted acquaintance in a closer conversation, like WhatsApp, still stay alert. Unfortunately, there has been a significant increase in fake news spread in recent years, especially on this social network. You could end up being wrongly informed and fall for a scam.

6. Pirated programs and software

The big thing about pirated programs and software is that you have no guarantee that the file you are installing is really safe. It is very common for cybercriminals to use this tactic to install viruses on devices that have downloaded the file available on piracy portals.

In addition, downloading from these pirated portals is an illegal practice, which can lead to 2 to 4 years of imprisonment. That is, when performing piracy you will not only be running the risk of falling into the hands of cybercriminals, but you will also be committing a crime.

7. Do not use open internet networks

Unfortunately , pass wordless internet networks are very easy to install malicious files and manage to steal data from the devices of those who use them. Therefore, avoiding always using public open networks is one of the basic digital security precautions that we must always follow.

For example, if you are at an airport, try to route your 4G internet instead of logging into the local network that the institution offers. If it is unfeasible, when using the open network, do not enter banking applications or click on links.

8. Backup constantly

Prevention is better than cure and backup is an excellent ally in this. Having your information saved in a second space prepares you for possible situations where you could lose everything you have on your device such as access blocking, device theft or malfunction.

9. Pay Attention to Security Notifications

It's no use knowing what digital security is and not following the notifications that protection programs provide you. Always check what the messages say and if you suspect something, promptly notify the system responsible for storing your data.

10. Follow the news

As we mentioned above, every day new scams and actions by cybercriminals are emerging. So, follow the news to be alerted to new practices and avoid falling into one. Always being up to date is also part of the digital security care we must have.
